Hi,
I am a newly diagnosed RA sufferer- having exhibited symptoms for at least years.... due to liver function tests being unfavourable I have just started Penacillamine. I would appreciate any experiences, successes, pearls of wisdom, side effects etc. Thank you Confused

Hi,

Welcome to the forum!
Sorry, I have never been on penicillamine, but I hope it works well for you.

Hi Tarot

I too posted on the other thread with a couple of links you might find useful.

Penicillamine isn't often used nowadays with the preference being methotrexate or leflunomide. However the possible liver issues will have restricted the choice of drugs suitable for you. It's a drug my consultant considered for me recently as I'm now at the point of second time round but I opted to try methotrexate again. But who knows I could be following in your footsteps ... you might even have started a trend!

Do be careful with the exercise particularly when joints are inflamed. Zumba can be hard going! I quite fancied giving it a go but having watched my daughter I would quite clearly end up in a hospital bed!RollEyes

Hi there,

I have tried various DMARDS and had to stop due to various side effects. Due to a tendency to develop chest infections, my consultant is reluctant to try me on biologics. As a result of this my consultant put me on Penicillamine in the Autumn of 2010. I have had no side effects as yet. However, it is important to increase the dose very slowly and the drug takes a very long time to have an affect. Each increase takes 3 months to work, if it is going to.

I have not felt any significant improvement on this drug. However, I have also not responded to any of the other ones I tried, so, I think it is me. My consultant assures me that Penicillamine is a very good drug - it has just gone out of fashion because it takes so long to work.

I hope it works for you. Good luck.

Karen
